Truth-Telling Love Songs

By Jenny Harris

Maybe it’s a master’s degree in Marriage and Family Relationships, or maybe I’m just old enough to understand what song lyrics mean.

End result? Most love songs are now ruined for me. Because no matter how sonorous the voice or catchy the chorus, I don’t want to sing along with short-term relationships, cheating, and long lost lovers. Noooooot romantic.

Scriptures say that love lasts long. That it endures hard things. That it is kind, hopeful, and selfless (1 Corinthians 13:4-8). Love requires constant efforts at forgiveness and personal improvement. Real love is accented by prosaic details of children, finances, homes, and hardship.

So why don’t our love songs reflect these things?

Actually, a lot of them do. I’ve been perusing lyrics and making a collection. Our gift to you? A playlist of our favorite truth-telling love songs 🙂

Happy Valentine’s Day!

PS – this list is obviously incomplete. Please share your favorite truth-telling love songs below!

Jenny is a star-gazing, book-clubbing mother of two. She has a Master’s degree in Human Development and Family Studies, which is mildly comical (but also a boon in parenting and relationships). Her kids will attest that she's crazy about reading aloud, time out of doors, and creative play. Her family's goal is the “abundant life,” as prescribed by Jesus.
